Shooting near Fiesta Foods leaves one dead

Police are investigating a shooting that killed a 44-year-old man who they say was attempting an armed break-in at an apartment complex on Wednesday evening. 

A news release sent out by the Las Cruces Police Department confirming the incident did not name the victim or any possible suspects. However, the release did say that the incident occurred on the 200 block of Madrid Avenue near Lowe’s Fiesta Foods around 11 p.m. on July 31. 

The release also said that police believe the 44-year-old man was armed with a knife and tried to force his way into an apartment. The release also noted that a 24-year-old man, armed with a handgun, then shot the 44-year-old.

The release did not say if the man was brandishing the knife at the time of the shooting or if it was simply on his person. It also did not say if an altercation prompted the shooting.
