A 24-year-old man was injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash Tuesday evening, and was rescued with the assistance of the Las Cruces Fire Department and Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue, the LCFD announced Thursday.

Firefighters responded shortly after 7 p.m. to an undeveloped area near the western end of Thurmond Road, where the ATV had crashed. Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue was called to assist because the vehicle had crashed in rugged terrain, per LCFD. The second agency used a Stokes litter, a basket-shaped stretcher, to evacuate the 24-year-old driver, who sustained multiple injuries and was not identified.

Once the driver was moved to a paved area, he was transported via helicopter to University Medical Center in El Paso, where he was reported to be in serious condition. The cause of the crash had not been determined as of publication of this article.
