ROCKtoberfest Celebrates the Joy of Rocks

Posted

Throw a rock in any direction here in New Mexico, and you’re likely to hit somebody who collects rocks and will thank you for the new addition. With its rich geological history, and diverse landscapes providing a smorgasbord of minerals, crystals and fossils, rockhounding can easily be termed a state pastime. Catering to those needs, the Grant County Rolling Stones present ROCKtoberfest, the organization’s 39th Gem & Mineral Show, which will take place Oct 19-20 at the National Reserve Armory in Santa Clara, New Mexico.

The dates have moved this year so visitors can take advantage of the wonderful fall weather in the foothills of the Gila National Forest. The new venue provides indoor and outdoor space and an improved visitor experience. This great family event has activities for kids and admission is FREE!

In addition to all the wonderful gem and mineral vendors from around the southwest, the Rolling Stones are pleased to once again welcome artists from the Grant County Maker’s Market. Also returning this year is the educational activity area for kids that will feature “mining” for Pecos Diamonds and an indoor playground.

ROCKtoberfest will include both indoor and outdoor space filled with something for everyone – wire-wrapping, lapidary and gold-panning demonstrations, educational displays, activities for kids, museum exhibits, hourly silent auctions, daily raffles, wheels of fortune, and many vendors offering gems, minerals and art. Speakers and off-site field trips will also be offered.

The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem & Mineral Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation with a mission of stimulating interest in lapidary skills, geology, and mineralogy; fostering the growth and sharing of knowledge in these areas with the public; and creating educational opportunities for members and the community.

ROCKtoberfest celebrates the joys of rockhounding 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, October 19, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, October 20, at the at the National Reserve Armory, 11990 US-180, Santa Clara. Info: GrantCountyRollingStones@gmail.com or Brenda at 973-303-3538
