The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office will invest approximately $1M in two rest areas, the Lordsburg Welcome Center and Rest Area and the Las Cruces Scenic View Rest Area. The sites will be closed during the improvement projects.
“Investing in rest area improvements contributes to the overall maintenance and enhancement of transportation infrastructure, ensuring its longevity and functionality,” said District Engineer, Aaron Chavarria. He continued, “Overall, improving New Mexico's roadside rest areas can have wide-ranging positive impacts on both travelers and the state's economy.”
The Las Cruces Scenic View Rest Area will receive approximately $7k in upgrades to the water system. It is expected to be closed for about 7 days.
The Lordsburg Welcome Center & Rest Area will receive approximately $995,000 in upgrades to the main building, landscaping, and restrooms. It will be closed for about three months.
Improving roadside rest areas provides a safe space for drivers to take breaks, reducing the likelihood of accidents caused by fatigue. Upgraded facilities offer travelers a more pleasant experience during their journeys, enhancing overall comfort and satisfaction.
