Two Organ Mountain High School students face criminal charges after a school resource officer discovered they’d brought handguns onto campus.

The students, who have not been publicly identified, face charges of unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises and unlawful possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 19 after they were arrested on Aug. 1.

According to Las Cruces Police Department Detective Carlos Carillo, a school resource officer, received information that the students had the guns and mobilized other police for the arrest.

“At this point in the investigation, there are no indicators that a mass shooting or other forms of violence were being planned. It is unknown why they had the handguns at school. It was unbeknownst to the parents that the students had possession of the handguns,” Carrillo said.

Carrillo also said the incident was not related to a break-in at a Las Cruces gun store in which police arrested other teenagers and accused them of the theft.
