Requests for absentee ballots open for 2024 general election

The Doña Ana County Clerk’s office announced in a news release that voters wishing to request absentee ballots for the 2024 general election had until Oct. 22 to apply.

Absentee ballots are used by voters who can’t vote in person or don’t want to vote in person during the election this fall. In the 2024 primary election in June, Doña Ana residents cast 1,972 absentee ballots – more than one-third of all early votes.

There are three ways to request an absentee ballot.

Residents can apply for an absentee ballot online at NMVote.org by visiting the County Clerk's Office at 845 N. Motel Blvd or by emailing the clerk at Elections@donaanacounty.org.

The office said they would send out the ballots starting on Oct. 8.

Completed ballots can be mailed or dropped off at the County Clerk's Office, in a designed, secured container, or in person at a polling site during early voting or Election Day voting.

“Also, if the ballot is mailed back, the voter should allow 7 - 10 days for the ballot to be delivered to the County Clerk's Office, ” the news release said.

Absentee ballots must be turned in before Election Day at 7 pm.

The news release also said residents can voluntarily opt-in for permanent absentee voting when requesting their absentee ballot.

“If a voter selects the permanent absentee ballot option, they will automatically be mailed an absentee ballot for every subsequent election. This option can be changed at any time,” the release said, noting that the option was not available for residents who want their ballot delivered to an out-of-state address.
