Mounted patrol recruiting volunteers

Posted

When you see security officers on horseback at events such as the state fair, the Bataan Death March or National Night Out, you may be seeing the county’s volunteer mounted patrol in action.

The mounted patrol program of the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, meeting on the first Monday of each month, is recruiting volunteers for these and other public events.

According to the organization’s website, the mounted patrol “is intended to allow civilians of good moral character, and who otherwise meet the criteria set by the Sheriff, to volunteer their time in order to assist the Sheriff… Members of the Mounted Patrol are charged with the duty of conducting, and or assisting, in Search and Rescue/Recovery operations at the directions and approval of the Sheriff of Doña Ana County.” Patrol members do not carry out functions requiring certified law enforcement officers, but allow for optimal allocation of personnel.
