Memorial Medical Center on Wednesday joined the nonprofit Running4Heroes in organizing a 1-mile walk in remembrance of slain Las Cruces police officer Jonah Hernandez.
Approximately 100 participants set off at 5:30 p.m., timed to coincide with a tribute walk Running4Heroes organized in Florida at 7:30 p.m. Eastern standard time. The route began at the entrance to the hospital’s annex on the west side of campus and comprised four laps around the hospital on the sidewalk.
Hernandez was killed while responding to a trespassing call early Sunday evening, Feb. 11, according to LCPD. His assailant was killed by a witness who had also been attacked, police have stated. A candlelight vigil is planned for tonight at Albert Johnson Park near Branigan Memorial Library and city hall at 896 N. Main Street, at 6 p.m. The event will also be livestreamed.
