Maria Aragon is a self-taught artist working mainly in oil paint on either canvas, artist's board or paper. She is a symbolist who combines figures from the West, including the Americas, with symbols from Eastern spiritual traditions as a way of giving these figures a new perspective. She has always drawn or painted but took advantage of the 14 years she worked for the National Gallery of Art's bookstore to study art and techniques on her lunch breaks. She started painting landscapes in watercolor and alkyd when she was younger to have presents to give to family and friends when she had little money to fall back on. While living in Maryland, she participated in four Artomatic exhibitions, starting in 2012, plus a mythology exhibition in Gaithersburg, MD in early 2018, before she returned to New Mexico, her childhood home. Currently, she works from home in Alamogordo, NM and sells artwork via Etsy. Website: /www.etsy.com/shop/MariaAragon?ref=hdr_user_menu-shop.
