Silver City MainStreet received funding from the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails+ grant for the Lion’s Park project.

Lion’s Park is located immediately north of the Main Street Plaza and south of the College Street bridge at Bullard Street. The Park was dedicated by the Lion’s Club a number of years ago along the San Vicente Trail. The project includes erosion control of the west slope, replanting with native drought tolerant plants, installing decorative fencing, picnic tables, porch swings, interpretive signage and a mural by the Youth Mural Project.

In addition to beautifying the area, the mural is also serving as directional signage for walkers on the trail. On the south facing side of the bridge is a sign that gives direction toward Gough Park and on the north facing side, to the Main Street Plaza. The youth under the direction of Jess DeMoss of Scratch Paper Signs, have created a wonderful riparian themed mural that includes a whimsical sun and moon with mustaches! The mural also includes some tile.

“It’s fun and I see the murals around town, and now I can show my friends the work I did,” student Eleo Warner said.

“I want to show pride of community,” another participant Deidranee Abeyta said,

“We are grateful for the funding received from the NM Outdoor Recreation department and just love the work being done by the Youth Mural Project. It’s a great collaboration” said Evangeline Zamora, board president of Silver City MainStreet.
