The South Central Regional Transit District (SCRTD) based in Anthony, New Mexico, has received the State of New Mexico’s Rural Transit System of the Year Award for 2022.

The award was presented by New Mexico Sec. of Transportation Ricky Serna at the state Transit Association Annual Leadership Conference and Expo, held March 20 at Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, SCRTD said in a news release.

The award honors one rural transit operator among similar-sized transit agencies serving rural areas across the state which has demonstrated excellence in system performance based on ridership, customer service, service expansion and financial management, the news release said.

SCRTD was also acknowledged at the conference for providing emergency services to Sierra County’s Senior Meals program during the pandemic when there were no resources available to transport critical meals to more than 300 families every month for more than two years, SCRTD said.

“This award exemplifies the collective work and effort by our employees and our community who continue to support and ride SCRTD service,” said SCRTD Executive Director David Armijo.

“Ridership has grown each of the past three years as we continue to prepare for the future with the addition of zero emission, battery electric buses,” said Sunland Park Mayor and SCRTD Board President Javier Perea. “SCRTD has successfully executed key projects that have helped to improve safety, increased ridership, improved communication while increasing regional service levels,” Perea said.

“New buses, a new mobility initiative, new passenger amenities and enhanced service hours, both evening and weekends, are improvements that our community has asked for and we are providing,” Perea said.

SCRTD was established in 2006 and began bus service in 2016. The district operates eight fixed-bus routes traveling more than 500,000 miles annually across a four-county service area.
