Las Cruces artist Roy van der Aa is Agave Artist Gallery's artist of the month for January, the gallery said in a news release.

van der Aa was born in Amsterdam, Holland, and grew up in Montreal, Canada. His formal education included two years of fine art specialty at John Abbott College in Quebec and three years at Concordia University in Montreal, where he studied printmaking and archaeology. van der Aa moved to the United States in 1989.

van der Aa’s work “describes creativity as the power to connect the seemingly unconnected,” Agave Gallery said. “His painted collages are a way of re-imagining landscape painting. Traditional landscapes are static snapshots that freeze a scene, but they ebb and flow, so when Roy began to sketch and paint outdoors, the wind blew his canvas board, and bugs flew into the paint. Not only that – images flowed into each other, and he wanted to find a way to express that. He overpainted copies of his collages in unique variations, finding connections between different elements in different ways.”

Artist Gallery, 2250 Calle de San Albino on the historic plaza in Mesilla, is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
