The Picacho Hills Property Owners Association held an in-person candidate forum May 17 for candidates in contested primaries in local and regional races “important to the community of Picacho Hills,” association member Janis Paul said.

Participating candidates included Darshan Patel of Lovington, who is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Congress in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District; candidates for Doña Ana County sheriff, including Democrats Kim Stewart (incumbent) and James Frietze and Republican Byron Hollister; candidates for county assessor, Democrats Daniel Sambrano, Gina Ortega and Ruben Reyes; and Democratic candidates for Doña Ana County Commission District 1 Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez, Emma Johnson Ortiz and incumbent Lynn Ellins.

The event, held at the Picacho Hills Country Club, was moderated by NMSU Department of Government professor Christa Slaton, Ph.D., and Las Cruces Bulletin columnist Walt Rubel.
