International Folk Music Awards Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant will perform in concert 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Cruces Creatives (CC) makerspace, 205 E. Lohman Ave.

The duo, comprised of Crystal and Pete Damore, won artist of the year at the 2017 International Folk Music Awards.

The pair specializes in snug harmonies, songwriting and intertwined guitar and clawhammer banjo, CC said in a news release.

“Ordinary Elephant’s performance in Las Cruces is part of an ongoing songwriter showcase series at Cruces Creatives,” the news release said. “Previous performers have included Lilli Lewis, a gospel, jazz, and folk musical polyglot featured on NPR’s “All Songs Considered”; Claudia Nygaard, a cinematic, storytelling songwriter who has won the Kerrville and Tumbleweed songwriting contests; and Scott Cook, a Canadian troubadour whose keenly observant verse has been recognized with top honors in the folk categories of the U.K. Songwriting Contest and the Great American Song Contest, as well as a nomination for the Canadian Folk Music Awards’ English Songwriter of the Year.”

Many performances in the series include participatory workshops on songwriting and/or musicianship, CC said.

The next scheduled event will be an All-Original Battle of the Bands, Friday, April 14, featuring local groups Daunted Soul, The Calista Band and more, CC said.
