Three exhibitions at the New Mexico State University Art Museum (UAM), 1308 E. University Ave., will help usher in 2023 in collaboration with the NMSU Department of Art (DOA). Two are focused on artists who teach. A third will showcase posters and art from NMSU's Permanent Collection.
"Together Through as Within," Friday, Jan. 20-Saturday, March 11, is curated by Leslie Moody Castro, an independent curator and writer based in Mexico City and the inaugural curatorial resident at DOA. The exhibition features the work of DOA staff and faculty, where each educator is also an artist. Participating artists include Chris Bardey, Tauna Cole, Craig Cully in collaboration with Kelly Leslie, Brita d’Agostino, Maggie Day, Jeffrey Erwin, Motoko Furuhashi, Michelle Haberl, Carissa Samaniego, Rebecca Smith and Bree Lamb/Muscle Memory + Joshua R. Clark/Muscle Memory.
Also opening Jan. 20 and continuing through Saturday, May 20, is "Ad Infinitum: Artists Against War and Imperialism," curated by Joanna Matuszak, DOA visiting assistant professor of contemporary art history.
The show will feature war-era posters and artworks from the NMSU Permanent Collection. The artwork highlights 20th-century imperialism and its effects, such as militarization, the nuclear arms race, the destruction of human lives and damage to the natural environment.
An opening reception for both shows will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 20, at UAM.
“Artists as Knowledge Carriers, opens Saturday, Feb.4, and continues through Saturday, May 6. Focused on art and teaching, the exhibition is a collaboration between UAM and Albuquerque’s 516 ARTS gallery.
The exhibit is part of "Desierto Mountain Time," a group of arts organizations in the southwest United States and northern Mexico that offer thematic programs with artists, educators, curators, activists and arts administrators focused on cross-border, regional and global issues.
All UAM shows are free and open to the public.
UAM is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
