Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Galley (MVFG), 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe on the historic plaza in Mesilla, will feature the art of Woody Hoffman and Jane Madrid during the month of March.
Hoffman retired from the Colorado Department of Agriculture and moved to Las Cruces in 2004, where he took up the hobby of woodturning, MVFG said in a news release. Hoffman regularly attends symposiums to hone his skills, learn new techniques and improve and update his equipment. He belongs to Artists of Picacho Hills, and his work has shown in galleries in Las Cruces and Santa Fe. Most of the wood he uses is from recycled sources, previously destined for firewood, but special woods and burls are purchased for special pieces. All utilitarian pieces have a food-safe finish, MVFG said.
Madrid has been a Las Cruces resident since 1959 and has painted since age 8. Her serious work began around 2005, the news release said. Madrid’s main media is oil and some acrylic. Her major artistic themes center around nature, with a particular emphasis on animals, flowers, birds and landscapes. Madrid is an active member in several organizations and promotes art in the area.
MVFG’s 30 featured artists offer original art in various media, including oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, fused glass art jewelry, woodturnings, stained glass, photography, ceramics, mixed media, decorated gourds, textile weavings, art tile, fiber art, natural gemstone jewelry, fused glass, colored pencil, charcoal, pen and ink drawings, prints, cards and miniature paintings.
First American Bank, 1553 Avenida de Mesilla, features the work of many of the gallery’s artists.
MVFG is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. every day.
