Many Roads to Beer

Posted

How much do you know about brewing beer? Ever considered learning more? If so, you’re in luck, because Friends of the Farm & Ranch Museum will offer a free lecture on New Mexico’s beer industry, by Stephen Taylor, the director of New Mexico State University’s (NMSU) Brewery Engineering Program. In addition to a discussion of New Mexico’s thriving beer industry and culture, titled “Many Roads to Beer,” Taylor will provide information on NMSU’s program, and his own personal journey to becoming head of the NMSU program. The lecture will be presented Thursday, Jan. 9, in the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum Auditorium.

Brewing beer is a small but vibrant industry in New Mexico, with microbreweries found throughout the state. In 2017, NMSU established the Brewery Engineering Program within the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department. The Program prepares students for careers across the brewing industry, including teaching the skills needed to provide research and analytical services to the industry.

Taylor, who has been part of the Program faculty since it was established and on the faculty at both NMSU and El Paso Community College since 2012, teaches an overview of the science of brewing and the historical interrelationships between society, technology, business, and the evolution of the current beer market.

Admission to Many Roads to Beer is free and will be presented at 7 p.m. in the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum Auditorium, 4100 Dripping Springs Rd., in Las Cruces. The Friends of the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum hosts a monthly lecture that looks at New Mexico’s agriculture, traditions and culture.
