Lunafest celebrates women’s films

Posted

LUNAFEST, the fundraising film festival dedicated to championing women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities, is being hosted virtually by Soroptimist International of Las Cruces beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. Ticket holders can join the event at that time or begin to watch any time after that date and time with 48 hours to finish viewing.

LUNAFEST, created in 2001, is the world’s first all-women traveling film festival. This year’s stories are told from a variety of perspectives that champion women and gender-nonconforming individuals, highlighting their aspirations, accomplishments, resilience, strength, and connection. Though the films are unrated, they are most appropriate for ages 13 and up.

All ticket sales benefit Soroptimist International of Las Cruces, which sponsors programs to educate and empower women and girls. One signature program, Live Your Dream, provides grants to female heads of household seeking undergraduate degrees or technical training. In addition, the group mentors area high school girls and offer them scholarships when they graduate, and pays testing fees for women to complete GED certification.

General admission tickets are $15 and student tickets are free. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.silcnm.org.
