The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra’s 2024-2025 season is coming to a close this weekend with performances of two major symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich, written over 100 years apart.
Everyone from classical music enthusiasts to newbies will recognize at least one of the pieces on the program for this concert – Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5, Op. 67,” one of the most easily recognizable pieces performed. “The Big 5s” concert will also include Shostakovich's “Symphony No. 5, Op. 47,” an equally invigorating composition.
Members of the symphony’s youth orchestra, a high school ensemble, will join musicians on stage to perform Alan Hovhaness’ “Psalm and Fugue for String Orchestra, Op. 4a.” A special guest conductor, LCSA board member Scott Lucas will then take the podium to lead the symphony orchestra in the theme for Australian Rules Football, “Foxtel AFL Theme.”
Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra is a professional orchestra founded in 1958. Music Director and Conductor Ming Luke leads the orchestra, which is made up of professional musicians throughout Doña Ana County and neighboring communities, who perform with world-class visiting guest artists.
Join the LCSO for “The Big 5s” concerts at 7:30 pm., on Saturday, April 12 and 3 p.m., Sunday, April 13 at Atkinson Recital Hall, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on the New Mexico State University campus and be prepared for a sneak peak of next season.
