Las Cruces Community Theatre (LCCT) will hold auditions for “Gypsy” 6-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, and Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the theatre, 313 N. Main St.

Director Constance Hasapopoulos will be casting numerous men, women and children ages 8-80 in the musical.

There are more than a dozen adult roles and five roles for children in the show. Some are relatively age specific, others are for any age actor. No roles have been precast.

Auditioners should prepare a Broadway-style song to be sung along with a pre-recorded track (from a cell phone is acceptable) but an a cappella audition is also acceptable, LCCT said.

A short dance routine will be taught as part of the audition, so auditioners should dress in appropriate clothing.

Rehearsals for “Gypsy” are tentatively set for 6-9 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays beginning Monday, April 10.

Additional dance and vocal rehearsals will be scheduled as necessary.

The show will have nine performances, which will be June 2-18.

The music for “Gypsy” was written by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents.

It first appeared on Broadway in 1959, with revivals in 1989, 2003 and 2008. The 1959 production was nominated for eight Tony awards and won for best musical theater album.

The 1989 production was nominated for four Tonys, winning for best revival and best actress in a musical (Tyne Daly). The 2003 revival was nominated for four Tony awards.

The 2008 revival was nominated for seven Tonys, winning for best performance by a leading actress in a musical (Patti LuPone) and best performances by a featured actor (Boyd Gaines) and best performance by a featured actress (Laura Benanti) in a musical.
