Head to Glenwood for High Flying Fun

Posted

Mark your calendars! Colorful kites will be filling the wide-open sky at the 19th annual Whitewater Mesa Kite Flying Picnic on Saturday April 6 on the mesa just north of Glenwood. Kite enthusiasts come from not only New Mexico, but the entire country, to show off a variety kite styles – from delicate butterflies to 30-foot-long beasts.

This family-friendly event has everyone from toddlers to octogenarians testing their kite-flying skills. There is plenty of space to celebrate the wind without fences to tangle kite strings, and room to park for a tailgate picnic. Bring a kite, a sunhat, something to sit on, and picnic. There will be a drawing for a kite at 2:30 p.m. Pick up a free raffle ticket on arrival.

Also, while you’re here, for a completely different experience, walk one or all six of the labyrinths and a maze across the road at Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths or walk the Gold Dust trail #41 which starts at the east edge of the kite field.

The kite picnic is set for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths, 355 Bursum Road (NM 159) off Hwy 180, between Glenwood and Alma, NM. Admission is free. Water, kite-mending supplies, a Porta-potty and loaner kites are provided. The event is sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association.
