Free computer literacy classes at library

For beginners on up, the Las Cruces Public Libraries is offering a variety of computer literacy classes during October, according to a city news release.

“The classes range from basic skills to more advanced, such as Excel spreadsheet functions,” the release stated. Registration is not required and the class sessions are independent of others. Attendees were encouraged simply to arrive early “to ensure there is a laptop available for hands-on learning.”

The class schedule during October includes:

  • Monday, Oct. 7, 10 a.m. to noon: Basic computer skills. Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite St. The class covers what computers are, how they function and how to use them properly.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2-4 p.m.: Internet basics and safety. Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. The class covers how to navigate the internet and stay safe online.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2-4 p.m.: Manage your files and digital pictures. Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. The class covers how to manage digital files and uploading photos from a smart phone to a computer.
  • Monday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to noon: Smart phone basics. Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite St. The class covers the essentials of using a smartphone – a pocket-sized computer that is increasingly important for communication and commerce.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2-4 p.m.: Your email questions answered. Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. Got a question about email accounts, from setup to maintenance to daily use and safeguarding data? This class invites participants to bring their questions.
  • Monday, Oct. 28, 10 a.m. to noon: Internet basics and safety. Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite St.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2-4 p.m.: MacBook basics. Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. This is a general introduction to the Apple MacBook series of laptop computers.
