It’s Oscar time again, as the 97th Annual Academy Awards honors the best and brightest in the film world with the coveted golden statuette. Who will win? Nobody can be sure, but if you want to be front and center, without the expense of a plane trip, a designer gown, and of course an invitation, your best bet is happening right here. The Mesilla Valley Film Society is hosting a live Oscar Watch Party and Silent Auction Fundraiser for the American Red Cross, at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, March 2 at the Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, Mesilla, NM.
Broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and presented as it happens on the theater’s big screen, this year’s event promises all the glitz and glamor we’ve come to expect from Hollywood’s biggest night. Front runners this year include the controversial “Emilia Perez,” with 13 nominations, and “The Brutalist” and “Wicked, with ten nominations each. All three are up for the Best Picture award.
Other contenders for Best Picture are “Anora,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys,” and “The Substance.” Nominated for Actor in a Leading Role are: Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist,” Timothee Chalamet for “A Complete Unknown,” Colman Domingo for “Sing Sing,” Ralph Fiennes for “Conclave,” and Sebastian Stan for “The Apprentice.” Nominees for Actress in a Leading Role are: Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked,” Karla Sofia Gascon for “Emilia Perez,” Mikey Madison for “Anora,” Demi Moore for “The Substance,” and “Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.”
The event at the Fountain Theater will include photos on the “red carpet,” light refreshments, Oscar trivia, Oscar predictions for prizes and a silent auction fundraiser for the American Red Cross. Auction items include film memorabilia, art, and more. Guests are encouraged to dress up or dress as your favorite movie character.
