The nonprofit Film Las Cruces and Bayview Entertainment will host the premiere of the film “The Empty Space” at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main St. downtown.
“The Empty Space” was filmed all over El Paso and Las Cruces so it feels great to be able to premiere this in my own community,” said writer/director Andrew Jara, who is Film Las Cruces’ associate film liiaison.
The “cosmic horror” film stars Joe Sinclitico, Valerie Alene, Rachel Olsen and Pablo Medina. It tells the story of a woman going to a support group to deal with anxiety and depression after a violent attack left her boyfriend dead.
“When her boyfriend seemingly returns from the dead, she will have to face her fears to find out exactly who or what has come back before she loses her grip on reality,” a news release about the film said.
The film script “was written as I was coming to terms with my own mental illness,” Jara said. “Using the tropes and techniques of the horror genre, I wanted to find a way to give the audience a very intense visceral experience so they could feel both the dark but also the slivers of light. Hopefully, this gives a fresh perspective to living with anxiety and depression that lets the viewers know that they aren’t alone in this.”
The film won second place at the Horror Hotel Festival and was a finalist at the Oaxaca Filmfest and “Best of the Fest” at the 14th annual Sacramento Horror Film Festival.
