Las Cruces-based chamber music ensemble Camerata Del Sol is welcoming the new year and celebrating Black History Month with performances in late January and February, the group said in a news release.
Here are the scheduled performances:
“We are so excited to present these epic works,” said Camerata Del Sol Executive Director Amalia Zeitlin. “The pairing of these two pieces honors our commitment to program underperformed composers such as Florence Price, alongside some of the most famous composers in history.”
Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10, Zeitlin said.
Admission to both concerts is free.
The Las Cruces concert will include a reading by African-American poets during the intermission and after the concert. Seating is limited.
“’Through the Refining Fire’ is a musical setting of works from the 1920s by three African-American poets, including Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, and El Paso poet Bernice Love Wiggins.” Zeitlin said.
The concerts will feature violinist and NMSU associate professor of music Daniel Vega-Albela, tenor and UTEP professor Brian Downen, El Paso Symphony Orchestra (EPSO) assistant principal second violinist Roberto Jurado, EPSO principal cellist James Carney, Zeitlin (EPSO principal second violinist), Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (LCSO) Concertmaster and EPSO Associate Concertmaster Brigid McCarthy, cellist and El Paso Community College assistant professor of music Alina Vázquez, EPSO violinist Mara Arredondo, EPSO principal bass Ian Narlock and LCSO violinists Julio Campos and Elisabeth Greene.
Since its founding in 2017, Camerata Del Sol has presented more than 150 concerts in the borderlands region, Zeitlin said.
“Camerata has a mission to make classical music accessible, affordable and enjoyable, and values programming rarely heard works and the music of under-performed composers.”
Camerata Del Sol was recently awarded second place in the “Best Fine Artist” category of the 2023 “Bulletin’s Best of the Mesilla Valley” awards.
