“Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
Oprah’s motivational wisdom aside, running may not be for everyone, but for those who take it seriously, the announcement of a marathon can be inspirational. To that end, Holloman Air Force Base is hosting its second annual Ace of Races Marathon, Saturday, December 7, 2024.
The marathon takes its name from Major Richard Bong, known as the “Ace of Aces,” who was assigned to the 49th Fighter Group in the 1940s. He was the country’s top flying ace during World War II having shot down 40 Japanese aircraft.
The fun part is, though it is a marathon, nobody expects you to be an Ace. This particular event is open to the public and includes a full marathon, half marathon, 5K and a Kids Dash. For serious contenders, however, the course is USATF certified, which means it’s a qualifier for the Boston marathon.
For many amateurs, running is about the scenery. Finding the right course can be as easy as deciding what it is that you want to see along the way. Participants for this marathon will have the unique opportunity to run on a flat course through different parts of the base including on the flightline past F-16s and MQ-9s.
The organizers want you to know that whether you are a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness journey, there is an event for everyone. The only real rule is, have fun!
