Arts Council names new executive director

The Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) has named Araceli Solis as its new executive director, DAAC said in a news release. She was take the position over from Greg Smith Feb. 11.

“I am extremely excited, humbled, and honored by the amazing opportunity to love, serve, and care for my community via the arts in the role of executive director of DAAC,” Solis said. “I look forward to making a difference alongside the DAAC team by working collaboratively with community members to support and grow the organization’s vision and mission.”

“A multi-talented Chicana artist, experienced educator and advocate for change, Solis is the outgoing art teacher at Sierra Middle School,” DAAC said.

She has more than 20 years’ experience in education serving in a variety of roles, the news release said.

Solis credits her husband and two children for inspiring her daily and making it possible to share her passion for the arts and life, love for education and making the world a better place, the news release said. 

“We all know that our futures depend on what our young people choose to do, and a strong connection to the arts will help them and help all of us,” said Smith, who served eight years on the Las Cruces City Council before becoming DAAC executive director in 2019. He announced his retirement last December.

Earlier this year, DAAC moved to a new home at 230 S. Water St.
