Known locally as “For the Love of Art Month” in Las Cruces, “February is bringing plenty to love in south central New Mexico, specifically in the new Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) galleries at 230 S. Water St. in the Las Cruces Arts and Cultural District,” said DAAC outgoing Executive Director Greg Smith.

Here are shows and events at DAAC during February:

  • Artist Georjeanna Feltha’s show, “Vindication, Restoration, and New Beginnings” continues through Feb. 25. An artist’s reception will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.
  • 5-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, the Derrick Lee Group will perform new and old jazz favorites, including Lee’s own compositions. An accomplished drummer, Lee will be joined by Michael Martinez on trumpet and flugelhorn, Josh Carter on tenor sax, Miguel Torres on piano and Arnold Schnitzer on bass. Tickets are $15 each and $25 for two and can be purchased at DAAC before the event, at the door and online at boxoffice.daarts.org/e/4/the-derek-lee-group. Seating is limited.
  • 4-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, Las Cruces artist Bob Diven will present “Confessions of an Editorial Cartoonist.” Diven, an accomplished painter, sculptor, singer, composer, actor and playwright, has been drawing editorial cartoons for the Las Cruces Sun-News for 15 years. Tickets are $10 and are available at DAAC, by phone and at the door.

“Love seems a most appropriate note to strike in February,” Smith said. “We love the work these three artists do and that people can come in and appreciate Georjeanna, Derrick and Bob in our galleries this month!”

DAAC is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, plus 5-8 p.m. every First Friday of the month and noon-5 p.m. every Second Saturday.
