Rocketeers with the University of Calgary’s Student Organization for Aerospace Research (SOAR) join 13 other Canadian teams, part of 149 rocketry teams representing 22 countries, at the Las Cruces Convention Center Tuesday, June 21. Close to 5,569 college student rocketeers visit Las Cruces and Spaceport America as they participate in the Spaceport America Cup during the week of June 20-25.

In 2017, the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association, which operates the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition, partnered with Spaceport America to expand the competition into the Spaceport America Cup. Each team designs, builds, tests and launches rockets with a payload size of 8.8 pounds and target altitudes of either 10,000 or 30,000 ft. Visit spaceportamericacup.com for additional information.

"Spaceport America Cup has grown to become a key engineering competition driving significant practical engineering learning, experience, and teamwork with teams from across the globe" said Cliff Olmsted, ESRA President and Chairperson.

The annual Spaceport America Cup was canceled in 2020 due to the global pandemic, however the event was held virtually in 2021 to accommodate the restrictions teams faced across the globe. This year, the 2022 Spaceport America Cup marks the return of an in-person competition.

"The Spaceport America Cup has become an exciting venue for student interaction and participating company employee recruiting,” said Scott McLaughlin, Executive Director of Spaceport America.
